Wearing a hearing aid in school doesn’t make me different

Voices of Youth

I am a student with high-pitch hearing loss and wear hearing aids. It’s tough sometimes. When I’m in school and talking to my friends, I often notice them staring at my hearing aids rather than focusing on me talking. It feels like I’m different from them and don’t belong.

When someone talks to me, I can’t hear what they are saying if they are speaking softly or are too far away from me. I need to ask them again and again or pretend to understand what they said.

If you see someone who looks different from you, wears hearing aids or uses a wheelchair, don’t treat them differently as they are human too. And if any disabled child is reading this, just know that you are not alone – I know what it feels like.

Don’t treat disabled people differently; be kind to everyone and treat them the same.
